People simply like to have reasons for what they do.The example he cited was cutting the line for a copying machine. Stating Im in a rush got 50% more people to allow you to cut in line. What was surprising was that stating because I need to make some copies also got 50% more people to allow you to cut in line, even though thats what everybody is doing in the copier line.Its the same thing with your new job.When negotiating your pay, this takes the form of asking for that extra $5K or $10K and citing an obvious, or non-obvious, reason.Ill be travelling more, so Ill need to pay for more childcare, so would really appreciate $10K more in the base.orI was expecting to be paid more to make a move, so Id really appreciate an additional $5,000 in order to leave my current company.Weve found, in actual practice with our 9+ mm members, that simply providing a reason, any r eason, can be very, very effective in garnering you that additional $5 or $10K.Polite persistence winsA friend was recently negotiating for a new job at a large famous tech company well call Giggle.And Giggle put together a terrific offer right out of the gate. Great pay, great job, great company.She asked me well, what should I do, should I just accept? I dont want to make them mad with a lot of demands.And this is where members like you hurt yourselves most.When an HR department at a larger company has extended you an offer, you typically have several chances to negotiate before theyll get flustered and go away.Especially if the negotiation is with an HR person and not directly with your hiring manager, what you need to understand is that HR has an entire process to get you to accept an offer once its made. When it came time to make strategic decisions about the gamers experience, I didnt have a seat at the table.To secure that seat, I decided to try engineering. Id enjoyed learning code, and the developers I knew had authority and ownership in a way that their design peers at the time, myself included, didnt have.So I took a job as a part-time UX designer. The product leader who hired me an engineer himself and also an amazing person agreed to help me improve my development skills by working on the code base on my days off.I loved it. At first, I thought it was just le arning a new skill. Then, I noticed something My design and strategy muscles were being flexed as well. Id become the customers voice on my team. Id taken part in important decisions not just about the product, but also about the company itself.Thats when it hit me I wanted all three skill sets because they made me a better team member and a stronger leader. When I first started UX design, my goal was to have a job in four months. Two months in, Id failed to hit expectations on a project. The design was terrible, and the client was angry. I felt like UX design was the worst decision Id ever made, and I almost quit right there.But two things kept me going One, I was only halfway through my experiment. Two, I liked the work even when it was hard. No, it wasnt particularly fun being told that my work wasnt up to par but the experiment wasnt over, and until it was, I wouldnt have the information I needed to decide whether to persevere or pivot.At the end of your experiment, whether it succeeded or failed, look back at your whys. Did interacting with people for a living turn out to be as stimulating as youd hoped? Did you find something new to enjoy during your stint at the law firm? If you failed, what kept you moving and why? If your answers align with your values, persevere. If not, pivot.If you do have to pivot, dont dwell on it. Not every role is going to align with your values and sense of self. But if it did, keep going. Reach for that next rung on the ladder youre trying to climb. I have yet to meet someone who is unhappy while learning about something that interests them. Challenged? Yes. Exhausted? Perhaps. But deeply unhappy? No.Ultimately, remember that its not really about success or failure at all. You designed your experiment explicitly to help yourself. If you found a career you love, thats a valuable outcome. If you discovered that you didnt want to pursue something, thats valuable, too. But most of all, you gave yourself the freedom to learn, to be a beginner again and to try something new. Goal setting helped bring clarity to what I actually wanted to do.Goal setting on the accounting career pathMiller was awarded the scholarship in 2010, got his Bachelor of Business Administration/Master of Accountancy from the Univers ity of Oklahoma, and turned down a job with a Big Four firm to work for a small, rural accounting firm with partners who were looking for succession opportunities.As for goal setting, Miller says hes still at it.Once a quarter, I try to get away from all of my pressing duties, projects and responsibilities, and look at my personal and business goals for the next quarter and the next year. And just like it was with this award application, I find there is something special in actually writing those goals down.Now hes the president of his firm, which has grown from four to 10 full-time employees and several seasonal employees, and hes still setting goals for his accounting career.From CPA exam to graduate school and beyondNorman Wohlschlaeger, a graduate of Missouri Baptist University, also was inspired to embrace goal setting in preparation for his accounting career. When he got a AICPA/Accountemps scholarship in 2009, he says it solidified his plan to sit for the CPA exam and get his masters degree.Becoming a CPA is a multi-year commitment, he says, but the benefits last a whole career.Wohlschlaeger worked for a variety of companies before settling in at Boeing as a computing security and information protection specialist in St. Louis, Mo.As an accounting and IT professional, I still set goals in four-month increments, much like a college semester. I also have more long-term goals, such as to finish a Masters of Information Management at Washington University in the next two years.
