You actually can handle the truth more than you think

You actually can handle the truth more than you thinkYou actually can handle the truth more than you thinkFor some of us, having to be truthful all day long would be a nightmare. We could no longer hide behind small lies. We would be forced to reveal painful truths about where people fell short of our expectations. But when researchers at he University of Chicago Booth School of Business actually recruited participants to be honest with everyone in their lives, the consequences of this honesty were not as bad as participants feared. We can in fact handle the truthIn theJournal of Experimental Psychology, the researchers discovered that we greatly overestimate how badly people will handle us speaking our minds.Across a series of experiments, participants were instructed to be completely honest with everyone in their lives for three days, or to share negative feedback with a close partie in their lives. The researchers defined honesty not as absolute truth, but as speaking in accordance with ones own beliefs, thoughts, and feelings. The participants expected the experience to be more unpleasant and isolating than it actually ended up being.Focusing on honesty (but not kindness or communication-consciousness) is more pleasurable, socially connecting, and does less relational harm than individuals expect, the researchers write. By avoiding honesty, individuals miss out on opportunities that they appreciate in the long-run, and that they would want to repeat.Kindergarteners learn that honesty is the best policy in school, but somewhere along the way to adulthood, these lessons get complicated. Research has found that we are walking contradictions who want to see ourselves as decent, honest people even when we will still lieif we can get away with it.Often, we avoid the truth because we want to avoid sharing information that is painful to other people. We can make ourselves sick with worrying about how other people will handle bad news. But being honest can ultimately b e freeing. Next time, you feel worried about being the bearer of hard truths, you can do a short ritual that life coach Raphael Cushniradvises. When you identify a fear that is unternehmensverbund you back from being truthful, ask yourselfWhats the worst thing that could happen if I went forward in this moment? Ask yourself if you can accept the worst-case scenario. After you weather the maelstrom of emotions these feelings may bring, you will notice that these emotions are not permanent. Once you accept your emotions, it is easier for them to subside. Now you know the most liberating truth The emotion you thought was intolerable actually isnt, Cushnir writes. Honesty will not hurt as much as you fear once you realize that you are strong enough to deal with its consequences.

How to ask for more money at a new job

How to ask for more money at a new jobHow to ask for more money at a new jobIn American business culture, you have to ask for it.Whetzu sich its a bonus, a raise, a better job, a better seat, or a promotion, you need to ask for it.Of curse, its too easy to talk yourself out of it. I dont want to be rude. I wouldnt want to come across as pushy. I dont want to get ahead of myself. But just as often as avoiding embarrassment or awkwardness, youre avoiding success and advancement.Time and time again, we see it. Members like you who tell us they were afraid to ask, or too nervous to ask, or unsure about the right way to ask.As often as not, they tell us years later that their fears were ungrounded, their concerns made of air, their uncertainty a mask for anxiety.William Shakespeare, as usual, may have said it best Our doubts are traitors, and make us lose the good we oft might win, by fearing to attempt.Dang doubts. In American business, you have to ask for the order, ask for the customer t o visit your store, ask for your supplier to give you better pricing. And in American business culture, you need to ask for the raise, ask for the bonus, ask for the job.How to ask for more money at a new jobOf course, one of the best times to ask for it is when youre negotiating your compensation at a new job.In our experience, it turns out companies often have an extra $5K or $10K in their budget for your role. Asking for that little bump is easy to do, often expected, and perhaps just as often, granted. This has been one of our most effective bits of advice over the years. And weve found the insight made famous by psychologist Robert Cialdini has been extraordinarily effective for our members as well.Cialdini found that providing a reason made it more likely that people would grant a favor or request. Which makes sense. But Cialdinis insight welches that people were much more likely to grant a favor even if the reason were completely obvious or did not make sense.A well-known princi ple of human behavior says that when we ask someone to do us a favor we will be more successful if we provide a reason. People simply like to have reasons for what they do.The example he cited was cutting the line for a copying machine. Stating Im in a rush got 50% more people to allow you to cut in line. What was surprising was that stating because I need to make some copies also got 50% more people to allow you to cut in line, even though thats what everybody is doing in the copier line. Its the same thing with your new job. When negotiating your pay, this takes the form of asking for that extra $5K or $10K and citing an obvious, or non-obvious, reason.Ill be travelling more, so Ill need to pay for more childcare, so would really appreciate $10K more in the base.orI was expecting to be paid more to make a move, so Id really appreciate an additional $5,000 in order to leave my current company.Weve found, in actual practice with our 9+ mm members, that simply providing a reason, any r eason, can be very, very effective in garnering you that additional $5 or $10K.Polite persistence winsA friend was recently negotiating for a new job at a large famous tech company well call Giggle. And Giggle put together a terrific offer right out of the gate. Great pay, great job, great company. She asked me well, what should I do, should I just accept? I dont want to make them mad with a lot of demands. And this is where members like you hurt yourselves most. When an HR department at a larger company has extended you an offer, you typically have several chances to negotiate before theyll get flustered and go away.Especially if the negotiation is with an HR person and not directly with your hiring manager, what you need to understand is that HR has an entire process to get you to accept an offer once its made. The process includes schmoozing, calls, persuasion, documents, information, and, very importantly for you, a little bit of wiggle room.So I told my friend that she didnt need t o worry until she heard something like well, this is the best we can do, and perhaps if it doesnt work for you it just isnt a great fit for you at Giggle. We eventually got her a bigger bonus, more vacation, and more equity, but, to their credit Giggle resisted our every effort to move up on the base compensation. So theres a limit. But if she had not asked for it, she never would have gotten more vacation, more equity, and more bonus.Once youve asked for your favor, polite persistence wins. And that, Members, is how you squeeze a little bit more out of the economy for you and your family.Im rooting for you

5 out-of-the-box tips from Barbara Corcoran on how to change your interviewers mind about you

5 out-of-the-box tips from Barbara Corcoran on how to change your interviewers mind about you5 out-of-the-box tips from Barbara Corcoran on how to change your interviewers mind about youBarbara Corcoran, real estate mogul and Shark Tank investor, took a question from a listener on herbei podcast who had been iced out of a job recently and just so happened to be 20 years younger than the other candidates. How could she prevent her youth from being a liability and more importantly, how could she quickly turn the situation around and change the interviewers mind about her?I dont believe you need to be older to be smart, said Corcoran, who started her real estate business at age 23.1. ) Slow down your speech. Dont sound overeager Speaking slower will make you sound more grounded and substantial.2.) Think of yourself as a caregiver. When Corcoran started her first business, everyone who worked for her was at least 10 years older than her, but I thought of myself as a parent When you wal k into the interview, you might think of yourself as a caregiver. Youre there to do a good job and take care of the responsibilities and the people, and speak from that vantage point.3.) Have a story ready to bring out in the interview to overcome anything you see as a hindrance. If the caller thinks her young age is a hindrance, for example, you have to develop a story that rings true and addresses the age objection before they even raise it. For example, Corcoran suggested an example that builds your backstory People think Im so young, but the fact is, Ive always taken care of my older siblings Ive always had a part-time job I always had to help my parents out.Theyll look at you as an older person for the rest of the interview, Corcoran says.4.) Dress for the part even if that means dressing older. So if youre wearing slingbacks that are appropriate for your age, said Corcoran, replace them with a solid shoe, a real dress, maybe even a suit Youre going to edit yourself based on w hat the person interviewing you wants to see. And if that means older, than by all means, go out and by that old outfit5.) But dont cripple yourself with sky-high heels. I never hire anyone who wears really high heels to any interview, confessed Corcoran. In fact, she doesnt even look at their resume. Her theory is that anyone who clumps into an interview on stilettos isnt going to work very hard once they get the job.Whether shes right or wrong, first impressions matter.

Can you name 10 companies youd work for

Can you name 10 companies youd work forCan you name 10 companies youd work forThere was a time when you could count on your employer to take care of you for the long haul. Youd graduate college, join a large corporation, stay there for forty years and retire clutching a gold watch. The company laid out your career path, your pension, and your progression through assignments.Yep, there was a paternalistic moment in American corporate history. That moment is gone.Given upheavals this past decade, you never know when your present employer is going to retrench, reboot, release you. Theres nothing less welcome than an unexpected and involuntary separation from a decent paycheck and a thermisch cubicle. So it is far, far better to keep yourself in the drivers seat and do heads up career planning keeping one eye on the future of where youre going is the best way to make sure you stay safe and comfortable in where you are.Youd prefer a running start should something ever go wrong with your cu rrent company, which is why its smart to have an updated list of 10 companies that youd like to work for in the future should the occasion require. Can you name 10 companies youd like to work for, or that youd enjoy working for? Can you do it right now?The important thing is to have a list - a secret list of companies youre seeing on the side - and for you to keep tabs, develop relationships, and ingratiate yourself further with the people and operations of those ten businesses. Keeping the number somewhat small is the only way to keep it manageable. You cant possibly track 20 or 50 companies, so by keeping your efforts focused on just 10, youll get far mora deeply entrenched in your select list.By taking interviews, collecting information insights, and steadily growing your contacts at each of those ten companies, youll create a safety web for yourself in case of emergency. The bonus is that this strategy also pays benefits today by keeping you apprised of whats happening in your industry.InterviewsYou should interview at one of your side companies each season taking the opportunity every three months to keep your interview skills sharp, and dig deeper into the business and people of that company. Its fine to interview on the basis of informed curiosity. You cant do it at the same company every year, because youll lose credibility, but interviewing at a rotating cast of interesting backup employers over a four or five year period makes sense. When pressed, you can share Im not looking, but Im always interested in what opportunities are developing, networking with people in the industry, and frankly, seeing how effective the competitions recruiting process is.Its a great way to keep up on whats going on in the market and understand what your competitors or peer companies are up to. Youll better understand the motivations and viewpoints of other people in your industry and may come away with inspiration for your own day-to-day work. One important wrinkle make su re to send gracious thank you notes thanking the contacts youve made for their generous time and attention. Mentioning a particular insight that you gleaned from your conversation is very helpful for establishing rapport for the future. Especially as youll be doing this regularly, you want each person in the industry to feel as great as possible when you turn them down.Information insightsGetting closer to your ten companies isnt just about interviewing with them but also networking with people who currently work there. And networking is something that you can do far more frequently than interviewing its easier to get started, its far less awkward, and its good to be a little bit social with your peers.Set a goal of meeting with somebody from just one of your target companies each month. Could be a friend, a fellow college alum or a former co-worker who has landed there. Or you could be trying to meet wholly new people you could go to a Meetup, a speaking event, or a product launch .Share your interest, and feel free to indicate that its not deadline-driven, and that theres no particular outcome youre looking for other than learning more about one of your company crushes Im not looking, but Im just so intrigued by what youre doing in my area of expertise that Id love to learn more.Increasing your contact baseUse your networks - your online social networks, your offline social networks, your college alumni and former work colleagues - to steadily increase the number of people you know at each of your ten companies.Who else should I get to know here? is a particularly effective way to leverage your existing contacts.Over a five-year horizon, youll have interviewed 20 times at these companies. Youll have met 60 people working there. And youll know far more about their internal workings, market outlook, and employment possibilities than any other candidate or person looking for work there. So should a downturn come, or the Grim Reaper snatch your company from thi s mortal coil, youll have your ten lifelines at the ready. And thats how you stay ahead and stay afloat in this modern, maddening economy.Have a great week, ReadersIm rooting for you

6 Resume Tips You Haven#8217;t Heard Yet

6 Resume Tips You Haven8217t Heard Yet 6 Resume Tips You Havent Heard Yet Welcome to Recruiter QA, where we pose employment-related questions to the experts and share their answers Have a question youd like to ask? Leave it in the comments, and you might just see it in the next installment of Recruiter QATodays Question Youve heard all the generic resume advice a million times Tailor yur resume, keep it to a page, make it look nice, use numbers if you can, etc., etc., ad nauseam.Today, wed like to bring you some better, more useful advice to help you with your resume. So, we asked our network of experts What are the best tips and insights you can share with our readers to help them make awesome resumes?1. Incorporate the Right Keywords Many job hunters are notlage aware of the fact that most resumes are now scanned into databases before they are ever seen by real people. In order to find their ideal candidates, recruiters use keywords to search for individuals who have relevant ski ll sets.Your resume needs to include the keywords that recruiters are likely to use in their searches. To figure out what these keywords are, analyze several job postings in your field. Develop a list of commonly used keywords from these postings, and then incorporate those keywords into your resume under the core competencies section.Having thee right terms on your resume increases the chances of your resume being selected for further review. - Cheryl E. Palmer, Call to Career 2. Focus on Results, Not ResponsibilitiesThe most effective resumes contain information related to results. Saying youve designed a successful benefits program is vague. Saying that youve designed a benefits program that saved the company $1.5 million over three years while maintaining a 90 percent employee approval rating tells me that you are as strategic as you are tactical. A schlussverkauf resume indicating several years of sales experience is okay, but as we know, it could have been one year of bad sal es experience repeated several times. I need to know what you accomplished and how you contributed to the companys bottom line.- Trish OBrien, Caliper 3. Skip the Microsoft Word TemplatesAt new student orientation, I often ask the students who have template resumes to raise their hands. When they do, I tell them, Great, now throw it out The ease and speed with which you can create a template version of your resume is a great indication of the lack of quality of such a resume. Even worse, hiring managers see dozens of template resumes even day, so even if you include great content on your resume, chances are it will not stand out. Everything of value takes time to accomplish. There are some excellent books and resources that can help you create a winning resume that is original, authentic, and reflective of your personal brand. I recommend Knock em Dead Resumes by Martin Yate. - Chaim Shapiro, Touro College 4. Know What to Include and What Not toThe most common question I get is s ome variation of, Should I put this on my resume? or Should I remove this from my resume? I have a three-pronged philosophy when it comes to what to include on your resume. If you can make an item be it academic, professional, philanthropic, or otherwise relevant, valuable, and visually comfortable, then youve got a pretty good case for including it in your document. If an experience is not directly related to what youre applying for, can you make it relevant by discussing pertinent skills? Even if you are listing a job that is directly related, are you making it valuable by discussing how well you did that job and backing up with numbers? If you have a relevant and valuable experience, are you organizing it in a visually comfortable way that is easy to skim? - Mashaal Ahmed, DC Career Coach 5. Look ForwardThe fundamental problem with resumes is that they look backward, not forward. Use these questions to create a resume to get where you want to go 1. What kind of opportunities d o you want? Your resume needs to be a sales tool to attract those opportunities.2. What are the key factors for success in your desired job? What do you need to demonstrate to be competitive?3. What specific skills and accomplishments can you highlight to prove your readiness to succeed? For many job seekers, preparing a resume is a painful process. They fret about reciting past job successes and anguish over failures. If you hit writers block, ask a coworker, colleague, family member, or friend to listen to you as you answer these questions and take notes for you. Get feedback about whether your responses are convincing and what you can do to strengthen them. - Don Maruska, Take Charge of Your Talent 6. Replace Objectives With SummariesOne of the biggest mistakes we see and one that can be easily corrected is the use of an objective statement. Objective statements are about the author and not about how they can solve the employers problem or the value they can bring which is ex actly what the potential employer needs to hear to hire them Our tip is to instead craft a professional summary or qualifications section that - Provides your strengths and what makes you unique.- Highlights your skills and experience.- Provides a benefit to the employer. - Outlines your personal brand.- Dawn Ohaver Moyer Jenny Casagrande, Potential Essential

How You Can Put Yourself on a New Career Path

How You Can Put Yourself on a New Career Path Article by Aliya MarderNobody wants to second-guess their career choices yet there I welches, in my first real UX role designing the interface for a mobile game, wondering whether Id made the right call.My worry? The flat visual mockups and addictive user flows that I was working on delivered value for the company, not necessarily the user. When it came time to make strategic decisions about the gamers experience, I didnt have a seat at the table. To secure that seat, I decided to try engineering. Id enjoyed learning code, and the developers I knew had authority and ownership in a way that their design peers at the time, myself included, didnt have.So I took a job as a part-time UX designer. The product leader who hired me an engineer himself and also an amazing person agreed to help me improve my development skills by working on the code base on my days off.I loved it. At first, I thought it was just le arning a new skill. Then, I noticed something My design and strategy muscles were being flexed as well. Id become the customers voice on my team. Id taken part in important decisions not just about the product, but also about the company itself.Thats when it hit me I wanted all three skill sets because they made me a better team member and a stronger leader. It took me years to discover it, but I was looking for the balance of community, creativity, and individual challenge that only a hybrid role could provide.Experimenting to Find Your FutureA little of everything isnt a career option that Id considered in school. Although I didnt realize it at the time, I discovered my path by applying experiment-driven design to my career1. Discover Your Ws Who, Where, and WhyI dont believe that anyone is born to do a certain job. Lets say, for example, that you thrive on solving a single hard problem and I prefer to jump between ideas. If each of us found a supportive environment, wed make equa lly good engineers or designers.Initially, I discovered UX design by talking with a friend. His startup was looking for a UX designer, but Id never even heard of it. He described a role that sounded amazing talking to people, solving problems, and being thoughtful and creative. I didnt have the skills to commit then and there, but I did realize that I deeply valued that sort of work.Whether you know what you want to pursue or just have an inkling, ask yourself why. Put pen to paper, and write freely for five minutes. Review your list, and keep asking yourself why. Do the exercise again and again until you feel like you have nothing more to give. Youll feel a sense of deep satisfaction once youve uncovered the reasons behind your inclination your terminal values. Once youve discovered those, you can carve a path that lets you feed them.2. Experiment Through PlayI like to play a game I call Design Improvements in the Wild. As Im going about my daily life reading magazines, grocery sh opping, whatever it may be I look for kerning errors, bad copy, silly Photoshop mistakes, and unclear buttons. Its fun, to be sure, but its also a way for me to sharpen my skills.I began playing this game long before I became a professional UX designer. It was my way of putting on the design-thinking hat, of faking it until I made it. It was experimenting Do I enjoy doing this? Do I like thinking this way?Find ways to experiment with new skills every day to set you down your path. bestattungs a small project here and a volunteer gig there. If you want to be a lawyer, intern at your district court. If you want to be a yoga instructor, ask a teacher you admire to mentor you once a week. You dont have to quit your job to startBut before you do anything else, understand that it takes a beginners mindset. Its critical to give yourself the freedom to fail. Youre going to stumble, but youre not going to give up.3. Evaluate Your ExperimentAs I took on small projects and critiqued fonts in my free time, I was collecting information about how I felt. When I first started UX design, my goal was to have a job in four months. Two months in, Id failed to hit expectations on a project. The design was terrible, and the client was angry. I felt like UX design was the worst decision Id ever made, and I almost quit right there. But two things kept me going One, I was only halfway through my experiment. Two, I liked the work even when it was hard. No, it wasnt particularly fun being told that my work wasnt up to par but the experiment wasnt over, and until it was, I wouldnt have the information I needed to decide whether to persevere or pivot. At the end of your experiment, whether it succeeded or failed, look back at your whys. Did interacting with people for a living turn out to be as stimulating as youd hoped? Did you find something new to enjoy during your stint at the law firm? If you failed, what kept you moving and why? If your answers align with your values, persevere. If not, pivot. If you do have to pivot, dont dwell on it. Not every role is going to align with your values and sense of self. But if it did, keep going. Reach for that next rung on the ladder youre trying to climb. I have yet to meet someone who is unhappy while learning about something that interests them. Challenged? Yes. Exhausted? Perhaps. But deeply unhappy? No.Ultimately, remember that its not really about success or failure at all. You designed your experiment explicitly to help yourself. If you found a career you love, thats a valuable outcome. If you discovered that you didnt want to pursue something, thats valuable, too. But most of all, you gave yourself the freedom to learn, to be a beginner again and to try something new. That, I think youll agree, is the most valuable outcome of all.A version of this article originally appeared on SUCCESS.com.Aliya Marder is an associate director and designer at Philosophie, a digital innovation firm with offices in San Francisco, Los An geles, New York City, and Seattle.
